Making Room for Life

Spring is just around the corner. The time of year known for cleaning things out, selling your home, or making a fresh start. Whether you’re ready for a big change or just some spring cleaning, we’ve got some tips to make life a little more organized. Especially if you’ll be moving or downsizing, the first step is always getting organized.

Choose one area of your home that you’d really like to improve. The key here is to make it manageable. I’m sure we’ve all experienced giving up after biting off more than we can chew. You might start with a small closet, or even one drawer. The smaller you start, the better. Taking baby steps will give you frequent feelings of accomplishment and encourage you to keep taking the next step.

Let’s say you’ve chosen a bathroom drawer. If it’s been an overflowing mess for some time, it can be a little scary to dive in. But follow these instructions, and you can’t go wrong:

Step 1: Empty the drawer. No need to think about anything. Just find a place to display everything that’s been hiding in there.

Step 2: Clean the drawer. See? Still not hard. Get a damp towel, and simply wipe all dust and debris out of the drawer, making it feel refreshed.

Step 3: Look at the pile of things, and throw away or donate anything you don’t need or haven’t used in over a year. Like the Q-tips that fell in the drawer and are now banged up and unusable. Or the Band-Aids that you bought and only used once because they’re so sticky that they hurt to take off.

Step 4: Put aside anything that doesn’t belong in that drawer. Like your girlfriend’s earrings that you borrowed last month and threw in there without thinking, or the hair clip that you keep meaning to put back in your purse.

Step 5: Once you’re down to the items that actually belong in the drawer, place them back in the drawer with care. Once the previous steps are completed, this should be a very enjoyable step, because you’re only working with a clean drawer and things you want to keep.

Step 6: Make sure you follow through with all of the things you removed from the drawer. Give the earrings back to your girlfriend. Put the hair clip in your purse. These acts of completion are what really bring satisfaction.

When starting with something as small as a drawer, you can finish this process in minutes. And if you keep tackling more areas, you’ll find an extreme sense of satisfaction and more breathing room as you literally make room for more in your life.
